2000-01 Outlook
Optimism is high for St. Joseph's University Head
Golf Coach Bob Lynch. Now in his 13th season
on Hawk Hill, the SJU mentor feels he has
assembled a young and talented group of golfers
that should return SJU to its place among the
region's top programs.
"We'll be a lot stronger this year," assesses
Lynch, "But we're still on the young side."
Leading the way for SJU is the experienced tandem of juniors J.P. Glynn and
C.J. O'Connell. "Fire" and "Ice" the duo each offers a unique skill to the
squad. Glynn is a fiery and often emotional golfer, who possess the ability to
rise to the occasion during big tournaments. O'Connell, with nerves of steel,
possesses arguably the team's top short game.
Joining this duo as a returnee is sophomore Mike Bosica. A pleasant
suprise, Bosica found the opportunity to play regularly as a rookie and now
has settled in as one of the squad's most consistent performers in his second
year.
In addition to these veterans, a banner crop of newcomers should have an
immediate impact on the Hawk's fortunes. Those likely to make the biggest
splash are sophomore Jeff Huntzinger and freshman Brian McDermott.
A talented newcomer, Huntzinger transferred to Hawk Hill from Rhode Island.
Although a red-shirt in his one season at URI, he received a taste of Atlantic
10 competition as the Rams captured the A-10 title. He starred as a prep
standout at nearby La Salle High School, earning first-team all-Catholic
League honors three times. He captured Catholic League individual crown as
a senior.
McDermott joins his brothers Mike ('97) and Kevin ('99) as the third member of
his family to play for the Hawks. A graduate of Haverford High School, he
was one of the state's top Prep golfers.
Rounding out the team for SJU is the trio of freshmen Bill Devlin, Ryan
MacDonald and Tom Spano. These individuals should press the regulars
for a spot in the SJU lineup.
Lynch feels that this group has the opportunity to stay together for a while
and do something special. "We're as strong now, as we have been in couple
of years. There is no reason why this team can't stay together for at least
two years. This is a real steady group."
