SOCCER SENIORS GO OUT ON TOP, DOWN TEMPLE 1-0
PHILADELPHIA (11/08/03) - The senior trio of Matt James, Adam Duffy and Pat Mondile combined to tally the game's only goal late in the second half as Saint Joseph's (8-10-1, 5-5-1, A-10) defeated Temple (11-5-2, 7-3-1 A-10), 1-0, on Finnesey Field. The victory gave 10 Hawk seniors a win in their final home appearance.
An evenly played match, SJU broke free for the game-winner in the 73rd minute. Mondile picked up the ball in the midfield and played a crisp ball to the flag, where Duffy one-timed a cross to James, who slammed the ball into the back of the net.
The Owls increased the pressure late and had several opportunities to score in the waning minutes, but Hawk netminder Chris DiStephano made a key stop and several other Owl chances fluttered wid of the mark.
A senior, DiStephano entered the game in the final minute of the first half and registered one save to collect the win. He replaced classmate Kevin Dougher, whom made three saves in the first frame.
Temple netminder Patrick Hannigan turned aside seven shots and actually had an opportunity to score the winning goal after pushing forward in the final seconds in an attempt to tie the score.
TU held slim advantages in shots, 13-12 and corner kicks, 4-2. The Hawks commited 20 fouls to just 13 for Temple.
SJU saluted ten seniors in pregame festivities, including DiStephano, Dougher, Duffy, James and Mondile, along with Tom Brislin, Matt Foster-Moore, Andrew Kulinski, Adam Petitt and Nick Pittaoulis.
