VELAZQUEZ BREAKS RECORD FOR CAREER WINS IN SJU'S 5-2 LOSS AT ARMY
WEST POINT, NY (2/28/04) – With his singles win in Saint Joseph's 5-2 loss at Army, junior Francisco Velazquez recorded his 47th career victory, breaking Frank Barnett's 33-year old school record for wins. The only two-time All-Atlantic 10 selection in school history is now 47-28 for his career.
Velazquez won a 7-6, 6-7, 6-4 victory over Army's John Sabia to improve to 8-6 this season. All but 12 of his wins have come at the first singles spot, making his record all the more impressive. Barnett ‘71 compiled a 46-1 record during his four years on Hawk Hill, winning 46 straight before falling in his final collegiate match.
Sophomore Jimmy Holland was the only other Hawk return victorious, winning 6-4, ret. at second singles. SJU drops to 3-3 on the season, while Army improves to 7-3.
