Gomez Named MVP at Hawks' 32nd Annual Women's Basketball Banquet
April 18, 2008
PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's senior guard Timisha Gomez was named Team MVP and assistant coach Susan Moran was inducted into the SJU Women's Basketball Hall of Fame at the Hawks' 32nd Annual Awards Banquet Wednesday night at Drexelbrook Banquet Facility. Pacing the Saint Joseph's guards, Gomez capped her career with arguably her best season, earning both All-Big 5 Second Team and All-Academic Team accolades, to go along with SJU MVP accolades. For the season, the four-year letterwinner averaged a career-high in points (11.2 ppg) and rebounds (3.7), while earning Brown Classic All-Tournament Team honors. Gomez finished her Hawk career tied for program's record for games played with 124, while post a 3.2 grade-point-average along the way, earning Saint Joseph's Reverend Emory Ross Award for Academic Excellence as well. A four-year standout on the court for Saint Joseph's from 1998-2002, Moran is the 25th member of the Hawks' Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, joining current Saint Joseph's head coach Cindy Griffin and director of basketball operation Ellen Fitzpatrick. Helping the Hawks to two NCAA Tournament appearances and the 1999 Atlantic 10 Championship, the four-year letterwinner was a four-time A-10 All-Conference and Big 5 honoree. An All-American Honorable Mention as a senior, Moran went on to collect A-10 and Big 5 Player of the Year accolades, along with A-10 Student-Athlete of the Year and Academic All-America honors in 2002. Starting all 122 games over her four seasons, she is the only Hawk in SJU history to lead her team in both scoring and rebounding all four seasons. She capped her career as the all-time leading scorer with 2,340 points. On February 24, Moran became only the second Hawk in program history to have her jersey retired.
Among others honored at the banquet were seniors Krista Hutchison (Roosevelt Hunter Community Service Award and Chris DiJulia Inspirational Award), and Amy Wold (Most Improved Player), juniors Jenna Loschiavo (Best Defensive Player) and Mary Kate McDade (Loyalty and Leadership Award), and freshmen Sarah Acker (Best Offensive Player) and Laren Robinson (Patricia Ryan Unsung Hero Award). The Hawks also recognized Gardner and Toni Foley as Saint Joseph's Fan of the Year, while Channel 6 Action News' Jamie Apody served as MC for the event. *** Photos from this event available at www.sidephotos.com. |
