HAWKS RALLY, BUT RUTGERS SNEAKS PAST SJU, 3-2
PHILADELPHIA, PA (09/23/01) - The Rutgers field hockey team scored a pair of goals late in the second half, as the Lady Knights edged Saint Joseph's, 3-2 on Finnesey Field. Junior Brett Dymarczyk and sophomore Kristen Teklinsky provided the offense for the Hawks, who slipped to 4-3 on the year. RU now stands at 2-4.
RU staked itself a 1-0 lead at 29:59 of the first half on a goal by Andschana Mendes off a penalty corner. Rutgers dominated play in the period, keeping the ball in SJU's defensive third of the field for nearly the entire half.
The Hawks, however got on the scoreboard with just 33 seconds remaining before intermission on a fluke goal by Dymarczyk. A long ball was played out of the midfield toward the Rutgers cage. RU netminder Stacy Gaenzle, however became confused and made an attempt to play the ball. Had she let the go it would have went into the cage for a free hit for the Knights. Instead, she miskicked the clearing ball and left the ball right in front of the goal. A surprised Dymarczyk then swatted the ball into the cage and equalized the game.
In the second half, an energized Hawk squad picked up the pace offensively. The increased pressure culminated in a goal by Teklinsky after a scramble in front of the Rutgers net. The goal put SJU in front 2-1 with 22:38 left to play.
Rutgers, however, managed to tally a pair of goals late in the second half to claim the victory. Heidi Harvey tied the game when she slapped home a rebound at the 12:33 mark and Mendes put RU on top for good when she lifted a shot high into the net with 10:08 remaining.
Lauren Bradley finished with 10 saves for the Hawks, while her counterpart Gaenzle made six stops.
The Hawks return to the field on Tuesday, when SJU travels to Lafayette for a 4:00 game.
