HAWKS DOWN RICHMOND, 2-0, FOR FOURTH STRAIGHT WIN

RICHMOND, VA (10/14/01) - Junior Kelly Butler netted a pair of first half goals to lead the Saint Joseph's field hockey team to a 2-0 victory over Richmond at Crenshaw Field. The victory was the fourth straight for SJU, which improved to 8-4 overall, 2-0 in the Atlantic 10. Richmond slipped to 8-6, 1-1 in A-10 play. The Crimson and Gray set the tone early, controling the tempo in the first half. Slotting home a pass from junior Kathy Sokalski at the 32:48 mark, Butler put SJU in front 1-0 less than three minutes into the contest. Butler added another marker fifteen minutes later to put the Hawks up 2-0. She cracked a low hard shot that was stopped by the Richmond goaltender, but the rebound trickled away and into the cage with 17:32 remaining in the first half. The Hawks dominated play in the first half, outshooting the Spiders 12-5 in the opening stanza. The second half however was controled by UR. Playing with a level of urgency, Richmond peppered the Hawk cage with 15 shots to just three for SJU. Only a sterling effort by senior goalkeeper Lauren Bradley kept Richmond at bay. Among the national leaders in saves and save percentage, Bradley turned aside 15 shots, including ten in the second half. With the win Bradley also posted her fourth shutout of the season. The Hawks next game will be on Wednesday, September 17, when SJU hosts Drexel on Finnesey Field at 7:00 PM.
