SJU DROPS FOURTH STRAIGHT, 4-0, AT VILLANOVA

VILLANOVA, PA (10/24/01) - Senior Lauren Bradley tied a school record with 22 saves, but Villanova freshman Kelly Driscoll came off the bench to score her first two career goals and added one assist as Villanova handed Saint Joseph's its fourth straight loss, 4-0, in a non-conference field hockey match-up at Villanova Stadium on Wednesday evening. With the win the Wildcats improve to 10-7 on the year. The Hawks fall to 8-8 overall. The Wildcats outplayed the Hawks from the opening whistle both offensively and defensively. Villanova's defense allowed only one shot on cage as Villanova went on to out-shoot Saint Joseph's by a margin of 29-1. Junior Meghan Helwig made one save as she earned her fourth shutout of the season, the 15th of her career. Bradley was stellar in defeat, posting a career-high 22 saves in the match. It is the most saves by a Hawk keeper since Andreanna Mevoli also stopped 22 in a loss to Syracuce on September 1, 1997. With at least two games remaining, Bradley has 167 saves on the season, a new career high. That total ties her for third on the school's all-time list with Lisa Fasano (1993) and is just 30 behind Mevoli's school record of 197 set in 1997. Villanova scored the lone goal of the first half at the 21:52 mark when senior Brooke Bergmann found the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season. Sophomore Leah Lisausky assisted on Bergmann's goal to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead at intermission. In second half action Wildcat head coach Joanie Q. Milhous substituted Driscoll into the lineup, a decision that would work to Villanova's advantage. Driscoll sparked the Wildcats offense by scoring two of the next three goals and assisting on the other. Driscoll's first goal came again with 21:52 remaining in the second half. Sophomore Christina Lugones passed the ball to Driscoll standing alone in front of the cage as Driscoll recorded her first goal of the evening. Less than two minutes later Driscoll and Lugones connected again, but this time it was Lugones with the goal and Driscoll with the assist. Lugones' goal, her seventh of the season, gave Villanova a 3-0 lead with 20:03 remaining to play. The Wildcats would add one more goal with 9:35 left to play on Driscoll's second goal of the evening. Driscoll redirected a shot by senior Stephanie Vrettos past the Hawks' goalkeeper Lauren Bradley for the final tally of the evening. SJU must now regroup as its hosts Atlantic 10 Conference rivals La Salle on Saturday (noon) and West Chester on Sunday (3:00 PM). Sunday will be Senior Day, and the final home game for the Hawk duo of Lauren Bradley and Katie Helder.
