Hawks Drop 3rd Straight to Drexel, 9-7
After starting out the season with three straight
wins, the women's lacrosse team dropped their
third straight to Drexel, 9-7, on Saturday
afternoon.
Bernadette Smith tallied five goals for the
Hawks while Drexel's Jaime Connahan netted
four goals.
SJU (3-3) could not muster any offense as they
scored just two goals in the first half. The
Hawks first goal did not come until the 9:17
mark after Drexel had already gone out to a 3-0 lead. Drexel extended
its lead to 4-1 with 53 seconds left in the first half but the Hawks
answered scoring with six seconds remaining to make it a 4-2 game at
halftime.
The Dragons scored five of the first seven goals in the second half to
take a commanding 9-4 lead with 1:38 remaining in regulation. The
Hawks would not go away as they rallied to score three straight goals,
all by Smith, in a 1:09 span to make it a 9-7 game. The Hawks,
however, would run out of time.
Drexel (1-4) keeper Shirley Sarker was the thorn in the Hawks side as
she turned back 17 SJU shots. SJU's Lauren Bradley posted 9 saves.
Freshman Amie Schmoltze added a goal and two assists for the
Hawks.
