WOMEN'S LAX RALLY FALLS SHORT AGAINST SAINT MARY'S, 8-7

PHILADELPHIA (03/29/03 – The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team rallied furiously from a 8-2 deficit, but fell one goal short in a non-conference matchup versus Saint Mary's (California). The Gaels squeaked by with an 8-7 victory to improve to 4-7 on the season and 1-1 on their spring break stop to Philadelphia. SJU falls to 1-5. SMC raced to a 6-2 halftime advantage, largely due to three goals by Colette Spencer. Spencer, third in the nation in goals scored, also tallied the first two goals in the second half, giving Saint Mary's an 8-2 lead. But senior Kelly Butler scored two goals off free-positions to keep the Hawks within reach. After a red-card was given to senior Brett Dymarczyk, the Hawks showed signs of life, scoring three goals in the next five minutes. Freshman Kerry O'Connell scored at the 7:07 mark, followed by classmate Ashley Belmonte's first collegiate goal. Junior Kristen Teklinsky scored at the four-minute mark to bring SJU to within one at 8-7. However, the Gaels played keep-away down the stretch to earn their fourth win of the season. Sophomore Courtney Huff made seven saves, while Megan Ceccotti stopped 12 shots at the other end. SJU held a 27-23 advantage in shots. SJU is back on the Finnesey Field turf tomorrow at 1 p.m. when it hosts Wagner.
