HAWKS COMPETE AT HEAD OF SCHUYLKILL AND ATLANTIC 10 HEAD RACE
PHILADELPHIA, PA (10/29/01) - The Saint Joseph's University women's rowing team participated in the Head of the Schuylkill this past Saturday and then returned to the waters Sunday to host the Atlantic 10 Head Race.
At the Head of the Schuylkill, the Hawk women's varsity eight finished 16th with a time of 15:34, led by seniors Shannon Deegan and Lauren Sumser. A second women's varsity boat competed in the Club 8 finishing 20th of 41 with a time of 16:24. The boat, led by juniors Suzanne Phillips and Sarah Banfer and sophomore Martha Limbach, passed through three boats on their way to the finish line beating, UMass, Drexel and Loyola.
On Sunday, the women's varsity 8 placed 4th with a time of 16:01 besting A-10 rivals La Salle (16:07), UMass (16:38), Temple (17:54) and Fordham (18:30). The women's freshman 8 crew passed UMass, Temple and La Salle to win the 11 boat race to post their first win of the season.
Both teams are coming into their own as they prepare for their regular season schedule held in the spring. SJU's men's and women's teams conclude their fall season at the Frostbite Regatta in Philadelphia, Saturday, November 10th.
