SJU DOWNS KENT STATE, 1-0

PHILADELPHIA (9/7/01) - Saint Joseph's women's soccer team dominated defensively to beat Kent State 1-0 during Friday's game. A long through ball at the 35-yard line by senior Laurie Muller, skipped past Kent State goalie Lindsay Mitchell (3 saves) for the evening's only goal. Muller's strike, which came at the 40:11 mark, was screened by freshman Erin Ryan. The Hawks were led by sophomore goalkeeper Alecia Kornicki, who recorded her second shutout of the season. Kornicki, who shares time with junior Christy Ganc, notched nine saves for Saint Joseph's in its second win. "Alecia makes you feel safe,"says coach Jess Reynolds, "when she's at goal nothing bounces off her hands, they're like glue." The Hawks dominated the field defensively while offensively the Golden Flashes out-shot SJU, 18-7. The Hawks, who are now 2-1 on the season, will travel to the Stoney Brook Invitational next Friday where they will take on Stoney Brook at 4 p.m. Kent State falls to 1-2.
