SJU TOPS LEHIGH, 2-1
BETHLEHEM, PA (9/21/01) -Senior forward Kim Dwyer took a pass at the 18 yard line from Katie Watson with 1:24 remaining to play and blasted it past Lehigh goalie Erin Iwaskiewicz for the game-winning goal to lift Saint Joseph's to a 2-1 win at Ulrich Field in Bethlehem on Friday night. The win upped the Hawks to 3-1 on the season under first year head coach Jessica Reynolds.
Watson got the Hawks on the scoreboard first, tallying her first goal of the season in the 39th minute. The Mountain Hawk answered back on a goal by Michele Adams in the 58th minute to knot the game at 1-1. SJU continued to pressure Lehigh until Dwyer tallied her second goal, both game-winners, of the season to break the tie and give the Hawks their third win of the season.
The match marked the first for the Hawks in two weeks. SJU was supposed to compete in the Stoney Brook Invitational last weekend, but that tournament was canceled due to the terrorist attack.
All four Hawks matches this season have been one-goal decisions, the other three all ended with 1-0 scores.
Sophomore Alecia Kornicki played stellar in goal for SJU, stopping five shots to move to 3-0 on the season.
The Hawks next match is home against Temple on Tuesday night (7:00 p.m.). It is the Atlantic 10 Conference opener for both teams. Lehigh falls to 2-5 on the year.
