PIONEERS PLOW HAWKS IN EXHIBITION OPENER, 7-3
DENVER (8/21/02) - The Saint Joseph's University
women's soccer team opened their exhibition season in
the Mile High city and dropped a 7-3 decision to Denver,
the defending Sun Belt Conference champions.
The Pioneers' Katie Antongiovanni opened the game by
scoring three straight goals, all within the first 15
minutes to give the hosts a 3-0 lead. SJU responded
with two straight goals, the first by senior Kim Miller off a pass from Jodi Young at the 15:58 mark. Young answered back just
two minutes later with a goal of her own.
Denver closed out the first half with two more goals,
including Antongiovanni's fourth goal of the game, to
take a 5-2 lead into intermission. An early second half
goal widened the Denver lead to 6-2, the largest of
the game, before freshman Michelle
Carmosky found the back of the net. One more Pioneer
goal closed the scoring at 7-3.
Senior Christy Ganc made five saves in the loss.
The Hawks were outshot in the game 24-7 and were short
in the corner kicks, 8-1. SJU opens their 2002 season
at the University of Virginia on Saturday, August 31,
at 7 pm.
