HAWKS POST FIRST WIN OF SEASON OVER DREXEL, 1-0

PHILADELPHIA, PA (09/15/02) - Senior Jodi Young tallied the long goal of the game, coming off a corner kick in the 81st minute, to lead the visiting Saint Joseph's Hawks to a 1-0 win over Drexel on Drexel Field on Sunday afternoon. SJU (1-2) dominated play throughout the contest in the first-ever meeting between the two Philadelphia schools. Young took a pass off the foot of freshman Jess Daugherty in front of the goalmouth and deflected it past Drexel keeper Sarah Peranteau. It was one of eight corners on the game for SJU. "We played really well," stated SJU head coach Jess Reynolds. "We dominated play on the offensive side of the ball, and had numerous opportunities. It was an all-around good game on both sides of the field." Reynolds credited the switch of sophomore Jen Harris from the backline to the midfield as the main reason for the team's offensive play. Senior Katie Watson controlled the center of the field for SJU while senior Kim Miller and freshman Michelle Carmosky played well up front. Senior keeper Christy Ganc recorded one save in picking up the shutout win. Senior Danielle Gregorie led the team's defensive unit while and junior Anna Marini also played strong in the backline. The Hawks, 1-2, next host Bucknell on Tuesday, September 17 (7:00 p.m.). Drexel falls to 1-4 on the season.
