WILDCATS NIP HAWKS IN OVERTIME, 2-1

VILLANOVA, PA (09/29/02) - Villanova's sophomore forward Laura Johnson scored in the 96th minute to propel the Wildcats over Saint Joseph's, 2-1, in overtime on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks were dominated in every statistical category, but clawed enough to keep with VU, who upset #9 Notre Dame on Friday night. The Villanova (7-1-3) defense held the Crimson and Gray (4-3) shotless in the first half, but despite 12 shots from the host 'Cats, the game remained scoreless after 45 minutes of play. Nova took a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute when freshman Brittany Hunsaker beat the charging Hawk keeper Christy Ganc to the ball and lofted it over her head and into the cage for her second goal of the season. The goal looked to be the game-winner in the first matchup between the two neighboring rivals. But junior Michelle Ford sent a long pass to freshman Michelle Carmosky who beat Wildcat goalie Chrissy Dolan to tie the game with just 1:29 remaining. It was Carmosky's third goal on the season, which leads the Hawks. Johnson sent her goal past Ganc just five minutes into the extra stanza for her third game-winner of the season. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for Saint Joseph's. Ganc made a season and game-high nine saves in the defeat. Saint Joseph's was outshot 30-7 in the contest. SJU returns home for an Atlantic 10 Conference weekend beginning on Friday, October 4, when they host La Salle at 4 pm.
