HAWK WOMEN FALL AT MONMOUTH, 1-0

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ (09/07/03)- Monmouth freshman Megan Schoffstall headed in a service from fellow newcomer Tanya Earl in the 70th minute to lead the hosts to a 1-0 victory over Saint Joseph's on Sunday afternoon on The Great Lawn in women's collegiate soccer action. The win improved Monmouth's record to 2-1-0 on the season and was the Blue and White's second shutout, while St. Joe's falls to 1-2-0. The SJU offense controlled much of the pace in the opening minutes of the match, registering seven shots in the first half, including three consecutive shots on goal in a one-minute span. St. Joe's out shot the MU 7-3 in the opening half, despite Monmouth having the best scoring opportunity of the stanza. In the 16th minute, senior Valerie Leininger connected on a long through pass to a streaking Maureen Masto inside the St. Joe's 18-yard box. Masto's sliding chip attempt was corralled by goalkeeper Stef Luicci, which kept the game scoreless. Monmouth broke the scoreless deadlock in the 70th minute, as Schoffstall got on the board with the service from Earl. Ten minutes later, the Blue and White challenged again, as Sands' attempt was smothered by Luicci. SJU out shot the hosts 13-12 in the match, which forced Monmouth junior Abby Shiffler to make a season-high nine saves. Luicci made eight saves for St. Joe's.
