HAWKS SCHUTT THE DOOR IN A-10 OPENER WITH TEMPLE
PHILADELPHIA (09/29/03) -- Saint Joseph's started off its 2003 Atlantic 10 slate the same way it did last year - with a win over crosstown rival Temple. The Hawks received two goals from freshman Megan Schutt on their way to a decisive 2-0 victory at Temple Stadium on Monday afternoon.
Saint Joseph's (3-3-1, 1-0-0 A-10) jumped on the board just 2:14 into the first half as senior Michelle Ford fed the ball to Schutt, who drilled it into the net for the first score of the game. Despite SJU holding possession for most of the game, the scoreboard continued to read 1-0 until the 75th minute.
Freshman Kaiti McCaffery found Schutt near the cage. Schutt accepted McCaffery's pass and knocked it across the goal line for the score, her sixth of the season -- good for second in the Atlantic 10. McCaffery, thanks in part to her record setting three assist performance against Drexel earlier this season, is leading the A-10 in assists with four.
SJU sophomore goalkeeper Nicole DiEnna recorded three saves and for the shutout. The Hawks held a 10-6 advantage in shots and a 3-0 lead in corner kicks. Temple dropped to 2-6-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the A-10.
The Crimson and Gray travel to Ohio this weekend for matchups with the always tough Xavier (Friday, 7 pm) and Dayton (Sunday, 1 pm).
