HAWKS WIN THIRD STRAIGHT WITH 2-0 VICTORY OVER GW

WASHINGTON, DC (10/24/03) - Saint Joseph's continued its push to be of the top six teams heading to Richmond in two weeks for the Atlantic 10 Championships with a critical 2-0 win at George Washington on Friday. It was the Hawks' third straight win. SJU (7-6-1, 5-3-0) got on the board in the 23rd minute of play when freshman Kaiti McCaffery played a ball up to classmate Nancy Cook. McCaffery, who earned her fifth assist on the play, passed the ball from midfield and found Cook in stride just outside of the penalty box. Cook then netted her fourth goal of the year kicking it around GW keeper Kelly Paolucci who came out of goal in an attempt to intercept the pass. The Colonials (9-5-2, 3-4-1) gained momentum in the second half but their efforts were halted when senior Michelle Ford connected with sophomore Alisha Paine for the team's second goal in the 57th minute. With the assist, Ford moves into second place on the SJU career list with 12. In a battle of the two top offensive players in the league, both GW's Kim Warner and SJU's Megan Schutt were held scoreless and pointless. Warner leads the A-10 in goals for the second-straight season with 10 while Schutt, a rookie, has the most points in the conference with 23. The Colonials Lindsey Bruno marked Schutt effectively throughout the match making several nice defensive plays. Sophomore keeper Nicole DiEnna made seven stops for her fifth shutout of the season. The five blankings are the third most in school history in a single season. Saint Joseph's travels to Richmond on Sunday for a 1 p.m. matchup. A win would put the Hawks in the driver's seat for a playoff berth heading into the final weekend of play.
